ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਆਪੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਧਉਲੁ ਅਕਾਸੰ ॥ आपे धरती धउलु अकासं ॥ Aapé ḋʰarṫee ḋʰa▫ul akaasaⁿ. He Himself is the earth, the mythical bull which supports it and the Akashic ethers. ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ जती सती संतोखी आपे आपे कार कमाई हे ॥१॥ Jaṫee saṫee sanṫokʰee aapé aapé kaar kamaa▫ee hé. ||1|| He Himself is celibate, chaste and contented; He Himself is the Doer of deeds. ||1|| ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸੰ ॥ आपे साचे गुण परगासं ॥ Aapé saaché guṇ pargaasaⁿ. The True Lord Himself reveals His Glorious Virtues. ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥ जिसु करणा सो करि करि वेखै ॥ Jis karṇaa so kar kar vékʰæ. He who created the creation, beholds what He has created. ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਲੇਖੈ ॥ कोइ न मेटै साचे लेखै ॥ Ko▫é na métæ saaché lékʰæ. No one can erase the Inscription of the True Lord. ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ आपे करे कराए आपे आपे दे वडिआई हे ॥२॥ Aapé karé karaa▫é aapé aapé ḋé vadi▫aa▫ee hé. ||2|| He Himself is the Doer, the Cause of all causes; He Himself is the One who bestows glorious greatness. ||2|| ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰ ਚੰਚਲ ਚਿਤੁ ਚਾਲਹਿ ॥ पंच चोर चंचल चितु चालहि ॥ Panch chor chanchal chiṫ chaalėh. The five thieves cause the fickle consciousness to waver. ਪਰ ਘਰ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਲਹਿ ॥ पर घर जोहहि घरु नही भालहि ॥ Par gʰar johėh gʰar nahee bʰaalėh. It looks into the homes of others, but does not search its own home. ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਢਹੈ ਢਹਿ ਢੇਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ काइआ नगरु ढहै ढहि ढेरी बिनु सबदै पति जाई हे ॥३॥ Kaa▫i▫aa nagar dʰahæ dʰėh dʰéree bin sabḋæ paṫ jaa▫ee hé. ||3|| The body-village crumbles into dust; without the Word of the Shabad, one’s honor is lost. ||3|| ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥ गुर ते बूझै त्रिभवणु सूझै ॥ Gur ṫé boojʰæ ṫaribʰavaṇ soojʰæ. One who realizes the Lord through the Guru, comprehends the three worlds. ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੈ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥ मनसा मारि मनै सिउ लूझै ॥ Mansaa maar manæ si▫o loojʰæ. He subdues his desires, and struggles with his mind. ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਤੁਧ ਹੀ ਜੇਹੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਬਾਲ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ जो तुधु सेवहि से तुध ही जेहे निरभउ बाल सखाई हे ॥४॥ Jo ṫuḋʰ sévėh sé ṫuḋʰ hee jéhé nirbʰa▫o baal sakʰaa▫ee hé. ||4|| Those who serve You, become just like You; O Fearless Lord, You are their best friend from infancy. ||4|| ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲਾ ॥ आपे सुरगु मछु पइआला ॥ Aapé surag machʰ pa▫i▫aalaa. You Yourself are the heavenly realms, this world and the nether regions of the underworld. ਆਪੇ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਬਾਲਾ ॥ आपे जोति सरूपी बाला ॥ Aapé joṫ saroopee baalaa. You Yourself are the embodiment of light, forever young. ਜਟਾ ਬਿਕਟ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ जटा बिकट बिकराल सरूपी रूपु न रेखिआ काई हे ॥५॥ Jataa bikat bikraal saroopee roop na rékʰ▫i▫aa kaa▫ee hé. ||5|| With matted hair, and a horrible, dreadful form, still, You have no form or feature. ||5|| ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ बेद कतेबी भेदु न जाता ॥ Béḋ kaṫébee bʰéḋ na jaaṫaa. The Vedas and the Bible do not know the mystery of God. ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ॥ ना तिसु मात पिता सुत भ्राता ॥ Naa ṫis maaṫ piṫaa suṫ bʰaraaṫaa. He has no mother, father, child or brother. ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਮੀਤ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥ करि करि थाकी मीत घनेरे ॥ Kar kar ṫʰaakee meeṫ gʰanéré. I have grown weary of making so many friends. ਸਗਲੇ ਸੈਲ ਉਪਾਇ ਸਮਾਏ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖਣਾ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ सगले सैल उपाइ समाए अलखु न लखणा जाई हे ॥६॥ Saglé sæl upaa▫é samaa▫é alakʰ na lakʰ▫ṇaa jaa▫ee hé. ||6|| He created all the mountains, and levels them again; the Unseen Lord cannot be seen. ||6|| ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕਾਟੈ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ कोइ न काटै अवगुण मेरे ॥ Ko▫é na kaatæ avguṇ méré. No one can rid me of my sins and mistakes. ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਉ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ सुरि नर नाथु साहिबु सभना सिरि भाइ मिलै भउ जाई हे ॥७॥ Sur nar naaṫʰ saahib sabʰnaa sir bʰaa▫é milæ bʰa▫o jaa▫ee hé. ||7|| God is the Supreme Lord and Master of all the angels and mortal beings; blessed with His Love, their fear is dispelled. ||7|| ਭੂਲੇ ਚੂਕੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ भूले चूके मारगि पावहि ॥ Bʰoolé chooké maarag paavahi. He puts back on the Path those who have wandered and strayed. ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ॥ आपि भुलाइ तूहै समझावहि ॥ Aap bʰulaa▫é ṫoohæ samjʰaavahi. You Yourself make them stray, and You teach them again. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ बिनु नावै मै अवरु न दीसै नावहु गति मिति पाई हे ॥८॥ Bin naavæ mæ avar na ḋeesæ naavhu gaṫ miṫ paa▫ee hé. ||8|| I cannot see anything except the Name. Through the Name comes salvation and merit. ||8|| ਗੰਗਾ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਬੇਣੀ ਸੰਗਮੁ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ गंगा सागरु बेणी संगमु अठसठि अंकि समाई हे ॥९॥ Gangaa saagar béṇee sangam atʰsatʰ ank samaa▫ee hé. ||9|| Ganga Saagar where the Ganges empties into the ocean, Trivaynee where the three rivers come together, and the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, are all merged in the Lord’s Being. ||9|| ਕਾਸੀ ਕਾਂਤੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥ कासी कांती पुरी दुआरा ॥ Kaasee kaaⁿṫee puree ḋu▫aaraa. Benares, Kanchivaram, Puri, Dwaarkaa, ਗੰਗਾ ਜਮੁਨਾ ਕੇਲ ਕੇਦਾਰਾ ॥ गंगा जमुना केल केदारा ॥ Gangaa jamunaa kél kéḋaaraa. The Ganges, the Jamuna where Krishna played, Kedarnath, ਆਪੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ आपे सिध साधिकु वीचारी ॥ Aapé siḋʰ saaḋʰik veechaaree. He Himself is the Siddha, the seeker, in meditative contemplation. ਆਪੇ ਰਾਜਨੁ ਪੰਚਾ ਕਾਰੀ ॥ आपे राजनु पंचा कारी ॥ Aapé raajan panchaa kaaree. He Himself is the King and the Council. ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਅਦਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਭਉ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ तखति बहै अदली प्रभु आपे भरमु भेदु भउ जाई हे ॥१०॥ Ṫakʰaṫ bahæ aḋlee parabʰ aapé bʰaram bʰéḋ bʰa▫o jaa▫ee hé. ||10|| God Himself, the wise Judge, sits on the throne; He takes away doubt, duality and fear. ||10|| ਆਪੇ ਕਾਜੀ ਆਪੇ ਮੁਲਾ ॥ आपे काजी आपे मुला ॥ Aapé kaajee aapé mulaa. He Himself is the Qazi; He Himself is the Mullah. ਆਪਿ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਭੁਲਾ ॥ आपि अभुलु न कबहू भुला ॥ Aap abʰul na kabhoo bʰulaa. He Himself is infallible; He never makes mistakes. ਆਪੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਇਆਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਕੋ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ आपे मिहर दइआपति दाता ना किसै को बैराई हे ॥११॥ Aapé mihar ḋa▫i▫aapaṫ ḋaaṫaa naa kisæ ko bæraa▫ee hé. ||11|| He Himself is the Giver of Grace, compassion and honor; He is no one’s enemy. ||11|| ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ जिसु बखसे तिसु दे वडिआई ॥ Jis bakʰsé ṫis ḋé vadi▫aa▫ee. Whoever He forgives, He blesses with glorious greatness. ਭਰਪੁਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ भरपुरि धारि रहिआ निहकेवलु गुपतु प्रगटु सभ ठाई हे ॥१२॥ Bʰarpur ḋʰaar rahi▫aa nihkéval gupaṫ pargat sabʰ tʰaa▫ee hé. ||12|| The Immaculate Lord is all pervading, permeating everywhere, both hidden and manifest. ||12|| ਸਭਸੈ ਦਾਤਾ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਈ ॥ सभसै दाता तिलु न तमाई ॥ Sabʰsæ ḋaaṫaa ṫil na ṫamaa▫ee. He is the Giver of all; He does not have even an iota of greed. ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥ किआ सालाही अगम अपारै ॥ Ki▫aa saalaahee agam apaaræ. How can I praise the inaccessible, infinite Lord? ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੇਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ जिस नो नदरि करे तिसु मेले मेलि मिलै मेलाई हे ॥१३॥ Jis no naḋar karé ṫis mélé mél milæ mélaa▫ee hé. ||13|| He unites those whom He blesses with His Grace; uniting them in His Union, they are united. ||13|| ਸਾਚੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਮੁਰਾਰੈ ॥ साचे सिरजणहार मुरारै ॥ Saaché sirjaṇhaar muraaræ. The True Creator Lord is the Enemy of ego. ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ॥ ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु दुआरै ॥ Barahmaa bisan mahés ḋu▫aaræ. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva stand at His Door; ਊਭੇ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥ ऊभे सेवहि अलख अपारै ॥ Oobʰé sévėh alakʰ apaaræ. they serve the unseen, infinite Lord. ਹੋਰ ਕੇਤੀ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਸੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਦੀ ਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ होर केती दरि दीसै बिललादी मै गणत न आवै काई हे ॥१४॥ Hor kéṫee ḋar ḋeesæ billaaḋee mæ gaṇaṫ na aavæ kaa▫ee hé. ||14|| Millions of others can be seen crying at His door; I cannot even estimate their numbers. ||14|| ਸਾਚੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ साची कीरति साची बाणी ॥ Saachee keeraṫ saachee baṇee. True is the Kirtan of His Praise, and True is the Word of His Bani. ਹੋਰ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ॥ होर न दीसै बेद पुराणी ॥ Hor na ḋeesæ béḋ puraaṇee. I can see no other in the Vedas and the Puranas. ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਮੈ ਧਰ ਹੋਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ पूंजी साचु सचे गुण गावा मै धर होर न काई हे ॥१५॥ Poonjee saach saché guṇ gaavaa mæ ḋʰar hor na kaa▫ee hé. ||15|| Truth is my capital; I sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. I have no other support at all. ||15|| ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ॥ जुगु जुगु साचा है भी होसी ॥ Jug jug saachaa hæ bʰee hosee. In each and every age, the True Lord is, and shall always be. ਕਉਣੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਨ ਮਰਸੀ ॥ कउणु न मूआ कउणु न मरसी ॥ Ka▫uṇ na moo▫aa ka▫uṇ na marsee. Who has not died? Who shall not die? ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਦਰਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੨॥ नानकु नीचु कहै बेनंती दरि देखहु लिव लाई हे ॥१६॥२॥ Naanak neech kahæ bénanṫee ḋar ḋékʰhu liv laa▫ee hé. ||16||2|| Nanak the lowly offers this prayer; see Him within your own self, and lovingly focus on the Lord. ||16||2||
