ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ मारू महला १ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 1. Maaroo, First Mehl: ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ कुदरति करनैहार अपारा ॥ Kuḋraṫ karnæhaar apaaraa. The Creator Lord is infinite; His creative power is wondrous. ਕੀਤੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਚਾਰਾ ॥ कीते का नाही किहु चारा ॥ Keeṫé kaa naahee kihu chaaraa. Created beings have no power over Him. ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਦੇ ਆਪੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ जीअ उपाइ रिजकु दे आपे सिरि सिरि हुकमु चलाइआ ॥१॥ Jee▫a upaa▫é rijak ḋé aapé sir sir hukam chalaa▫i▫aa. ||1|| He formed the living beings, and He Himself sustains them; the Hukam of His Command controls each and every one. ||1|| ਹੁਕਮੁ ਚਲਾਇ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥ हुकमु चलाइ रहिआ भरपूरे ॥ Hukam chalaa▫é rahi▫aa bʰarpooré. The all-pervading Lord orchestrates all through His Hukam. ਕਿਸੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾਂ ਦੂਰੇ ॥ किसु नेड़ै किसु आखां दूरे ॥ Kis néṛæ kis aakʰaaⁿ ḋooré. Who is near, and who is far away? ਗੁਪਤ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹਰਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਾਕੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ गुपत प्रगट हरि घटि घटि देखहु वरतै ताकु सबाइआ ॥२॥ Gupaṫ pargat har gʰat gʰat ḋékʰhu varṫæ ṫaak sabaa▫i▫aa. ||2|| Behold the Lord, both hidden and manifest, in each and every heart; the unique Lord is permeating all. ||2|| ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ जिस कउ मेले सुरति समाए ॥ Jis ka▫o mélé suraṫ samaa▫é. One whom the Lord unites with Himself, merges in conscious awareness. ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥ गुर सबदी हरि नामु धिआए ॥ Gur sabḋee har naam ḋʰi▫aa▫é. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, meditate on the Lord’s Name. ਆਨਦ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ आनद रूप अनूप अगोचर गुर मिलिऐ भरमु जाइआ ॥३॥ Aanaḋ roop anoop agochar gur mili▫æ bʰaram jaa▫i▫aa. ||3|| God is the embodiment of bliss, incomparably beautiful and unfathomable; meeting with the Guru, doubt is dispelled. ||3|| ਮਨ ਤਨ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ मन तन धन ते नामु पिआरा ॥ Man ṫan ḋʰan ṫé naam pi▫aaraa. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is more dear to me than my mind, body and wealth. ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ਚਲਣਵਾਰਾ ॥ अंति सखाई चलणवारा ॥ Anṫ sakʰaa▫ee chalaṇvaaraa. In the end, when I must depart, it shall be my only help and support. ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰ ਨਹੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਬੇਲੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ मोह पसार नही संगि बेली बिनु हरि गुर किनि सुखु पाइआ ॥४॥ Moh pasaar nahee sang bélee bin har gur kin sukʰ paa▫i▫aa. ||4|| In this world of love and attachment, no one is anyone else’s friend or companion; without the Lord, without the Guru, who has ever found peace? ||4|| ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ जिस कउ नदरि करे गुरु पूरा ॥ Jis ka▫o naḋar karé gur pooraa. He, unto whom the Perfect Guru grants His Grace, ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੂਰਾ ॥ सबदि मिलाए गुरमति सूरा ॥ Sabaḋ milaa▫é gurmaṫ sooraa. is merged in the Word of the Shabad, through the Teachings of the brave, heroic Guru. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ नानक गुर के चरन सरेवहु जिनि भूला मारगि पाइआ ॥५॥ Naanak gur ké charan sarévhu jin bʰoolaa maarag paa▫i▫aa. ||5|| O Nanak! Dwell upon, and serve at the Guru’s feet; He places those who wander back on the Path. ||5|| ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਸੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ संत जनां हरि धनु जसु पिआरा ॥ Sanṫ janaaⁿ har ḋʰan jas pi▫aaraa. The wealth of the Lord’s Praise is very dear to the humble Saints. ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥ गुरमति पाइआ नामु तुमारा ॥ Gurmaṫ paa▫i▫aa naam ṫumaaraa. Through the Guru’s Teachings, I have obtained Your Name, Lord. ਜਾਚਿਕੁ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੇ ਦਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੬॥ जाचिकु सेव करे दरि हरि कै हरि दरगह जसु गाइआ ॥६॥ Jaachik sév karé ḋar har kæ har ḋargėh jas gaa▫i▫aa. ||6|| The beggar serves at the Lord’s door, and in the Court of the Lord, sings His Praises. ||6|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥ सतिगुरु मिलै त महलि बुलाए ॥ Saṫgur milæ ṫa mahal bulaa▫é. When one meets the True Guru, he is called into the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence. ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਗਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥ साची दरगह गति पति पाए ॥ Saachee ḋargėh gaṫ paṫ paa▫é. In the True Court, he is blessed with salvation and honor. ਸਾਕਤ ਠਉਰ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥ साकत ठउर नाही हरि मंदर जनम मरै दुखु पाइआ ॥७॥ Saakaṫ tʰa▫ur naahee har manḋar janam maræ ḋukʰ paa▫i▫aa. ||7|| The faithless cynic has no place of rest in the Lord’s palace; he suffers the pains of birth and death. ||7|| ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਅਥਾਹਾ ॥ सेवहु सतिगुर समुंदु अथाहा ॥ Sévhu saṫgur samunḋ aṫʰaahaa. So, serve the True Guru, the unfathomable ocean, ਪਾਵਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਲਾਹਾ ॥ पावहु नामु रतनु धनु लाहा ॥ Paavhu naam raṫan ḋʰan laahaa. and you shall obtain the profit, the wealth, the jewel of the Naam. ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਲੁ ਜਾਇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਰ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੮॥ बिखिआ मलु जाइ अमृत सरि नावहु गुर सर संतोखु पाइआ ॥८॥ Bikʰi▫aa mal jaa▫é amriṫ sar naavhu gur sar sanṫokʰ paa▫i▫aa. ||8|| The filth of corruption is washed away, by bathing in the pool of Ambrosial Nectar. In the Guru’s pool, contentment is obtained. ||8|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸੰਕ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ सतिगुर सेवहु संक न कीजै ॥ Saṫgur sévhu sank na keejæ. So, serve the Guru without hesitation. ਆਸਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ਰਹੀਜੈ ॥ आसा माहि निरासु रहीजै ॥ Aasaa maahi niraas raheejæ. And in the midst of hope, remain unmoved by hope. ਸੰਸਾ ਦੂਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੁ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੯॥ संसा दूख बिनासनु सेवहु फिरि बाहुड़ि रोगु न लाइआ ॥९॥ Sansaa ḋookʰ binaasan sévhu fir baahuṛ rog na laa▫i▫aa. ||9|| Serve the Eradicator of cynicism and suffering, and you shall never again be afflicted by the disease. ||9|| ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਡੀਆਏ ॥ साचे भावै तिसु वडीआए ॥ Saaché bʰaavæ ṫis vadee▫aa▫é. One who is pleasing to the True Lord is blessed with glorious greatness. ਕਉਨੁ ਸੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥ कउनु सु दूजा तिसु समझाए ॥ Ka▫un so ḋoojaa ṫis samjʰaa▫é. Who else can teach him anything? ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਏਕਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥ हरि गुर मूरति एका वरतै नानक हरि गुर भाइआ ॥१०॥ Har gur mooraṫ ékaa varṫæ Naanak har gur bʰaa▫i▫aa. ||10|| The Lord and the Guru are pervading in one form. O Nanak! The Lord loves the Guru. ||10|| ਵਾਚਹਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨਾਂ ॥ वाचहि पुसतक वेद पुरानां ॥ vaachėh pusṫak véḋ puraanaaⁿ. Some read scriptures, the Vedas and the Puranas. ਇਕ ਬਹਿ ਸੁਨਹਿ ਸੁਨਾਵਹਿ ਕਾਨਾਂ ॥ इक बहि सुनहि सुनावहि कानां ॥ Ik bahi sunėh sunaavėh kaanaaⁿ. Some sit and listen, and read to others. ਅਜਗਰ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਖੁਲੑੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥ अजगर कपटु कहहु किउ खुल्है बिनु सतिगुर ततु न पाइआ ॥११॥ Ajgar kapat kahhu ki▫o kʰulĥæ bin saṫgur ṫaṫ na paa▫i▫aa. ||11|| Tell me, how can the heavy, rigid doors be opened? Without the True Guru, the essence of reality is not realized. ||11|| ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਭੂਤਿ ਲਗਾਵਹਿ ਭਸਮੈ ॥ करहि बिभूति लगावहि भसमै ॥ Karahi bibʰooṫ lagaavėh bʰasmæ. Some collect dust, and smear their bodies with ashes; ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲੁ ਸੁ ਹਉਮੈ ॥ अंतरि क्रोधु चंडालु सु हउमै ॥ Anṫar kroḋʰ chandaal so ha▫umæ. but deep within them are the outcasts of anger and egotism. ਪਾਖੰਡ ਕੀਨੇ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥ पाखंड कीने जोगु न पाईऐ बिनु सतिगुर अलखु न पाइआ ॥१२॥ Pakʰand keené jog na paa▫ee▫æ bin saṫgur alakʰ na paa▫i▫aa. ||12|| Practicing hypocrisy, Yoga is not obtained; without the True Guru, the unseen Lord is not found. ||12|| ਤੀਰਥ ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਉਦਿਆਨਾ ॥ तीरथ वरत नेम करहि उदिआना ॥ Ṫiraṫʰ varaṫ ném karahi uḋi▫aanaa. Some make vows to visit sacred shrines of pilgrimage, keep fasts and live in the forest. ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਥਹਿ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥ जतु सतु संजमु कथहि गिआना ॥ Jaṫ saṫ sanjam kaṫʰėh gi▫aanaa. Some practice chastity, charity and self-discipline, and speak of spiritual wisdom. ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥ राम नाम बिनु किउ सुखु पाईऐ बिनु सतिगुर भरमु न जाइआ ॥१३॥ Raam naam bin ki▫o sukʰ paa▫ee▫æ bin saṫgur bʰaram na jaa▫i▫aa. ||13|| But without the Lord’s Name, how can anyone find peace? Without the True Guru, doubt is not dispelled. ||13|| ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਭਾਠੀ ॥ निउली करम भुइअंगम भाठी ॥ Ni▫ulee karam bʰu▫i▫angam bʰaatʰee. Inner cleansing techniques, channeling the energy to raise the Kundalini to the Tenth Gate, ਰੇਚਕ ਕੁੰਭਕ ਪੂਰਕ ਮਨ ਹਾਠੀ ॥ रेचक कु्मभक पूरक मन हाठी ॥ Réchak kumbʰak poorak man haatʰee. inhaling, exhaling and holding the breath by the force of the mind - ਪਾਖੰਡ ਧਰਮੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥ पाखंड धरमु प्रीति नही हरि सउ गुर सबद महा रसु पाइआ ॥१४॥ Pakʰand ḋʰaram pareeṫ nahee har sa▫o gur sabaḋ mahaa ras paa▫i▫aa. ||14|| by empty hypocritical practices, Dharmic love for the Lord is not produced. Only through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad is the sublime, supreme essence obtained. ||14|| ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਰਹੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥ कुदरति देखि रहे मनु मानिआ ॥ Kuḋraṫ ḋékʰ rahé man maani▫aa. Seeing the Lord’s creative power, my mind remains satisfied. ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥ गुर सबदी सभु ब्रहमु पछानिआ ॥ Gur sabḋee sabʰ barahm pachʰaani▫aa. Through the Guru’s Shabad, I have realized that all is God. ਨਾਨਕ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੫॥੨੨॥ नानक आतम रामु सबाइआ गुर सतिगुर अलखु लखाइआ ॥१५॥५॥२२॥ Naanak aaṫam raam sabaa▫i▫aa gur saṫgur alakʰ lakʰaa▫i▫aa. ||15||5||22|| O Nanak! The Lord, the Supreme Soul, is in all. The Guru, the True Guru, has inspired me to see the unseen Lord. ||15||5||22||
