ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ मारू महला ३ ॥ Maaroo mėhlaa 3. Maaroo, Third Mehl: ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ निहचलु एकु सदा सचु सोई ॥ Nihchal ék saḋaa sach so▫ee. The One Lord is eternal and unchanging, forever True. ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਭੀਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ हरि रसि भीने सदा धिआइनि गुरमति सीलु संनाहा हे ॥१॥ Har ras bʰeené saḋaa ḋʰi▫aa▫in gurmaṫ seel sannaahaa hé. ||1|| Those who are drenched with the sublime essence of the Lord, meditate forever on Him; following the Guru’s Teachings, they obtain the armor of humility. ||1|| ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ पूरे गुर ते सोझी होई ॥ Pooré gur ṫé sojʰee ho▫ee. Through the Perfect Guru, this understanding is obtained. ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥ अंदरि रंगु सदा सचिआरा ॥ Anḋar rang saḋaa sachi▫aaraa. Deep within, they love the True Lord forever. ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ गुर कै सबदि हरि नामि पिआरा ॥ Gur kæ sabaḋ har naam pi▫aaraa. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they love the Lord’s Name. ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ नउ निधि नामु वसिआ घट अंतरि छोडिआ माइआ का लाहा हे ॥२॥ Na▫o niḋʰ naam vasi▫aa gʰat anṫar chʰodi▫aa maa▫i▫aa kaa laahaa hé. ||2|| The Naam, the embodiment of the nine treasures, abides within their hearts; they renounce the profit of Maya. ||2|| ਰਈਅਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਈ ॥ रईअति राजे दुरमति दोई ॥ Ra▫ee▫aṫ raajé ḋurmaṫ ḋo▫ee. Both the king and his subjects are involved in evil-mindedness and duality. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ बिनु सतिगुर सेवे एकु न होई ॥ Bin saṫgur sévé ék na ho▫ee. Without serving the True Guru, they do not become one with the Lord. ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਤਿਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ एकु धिआइनि सदा सुखु पाइनि निहचलु राजु तिनाहा हे ॥३॥ Ék ḋʰi▫aa▫in saḋaa sukʰ paa▫in nihchal raaj ṫinaahaa hé. ||3|| Those who meditate on the One Lord find eternal peace. Their power is eternal and unfailing. ||3|| ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਰਖੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ आवणु जाणा रखै न कोई ॥ Aavaṇ jaaṇaa rakʰæ na ko▫ee. No one can save them from coming and going. ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥ जंमणु मरणु तिसै ते होई ॥ Jamaṇ maraṇ ṫisæ ṫé ho▫ee. Birth and death come from Him. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ गुरमुखि साचा सदा धिआवहु गति मुकति तिसै ते पाहा हे ॥४॥ Gurmukʰ saachaa saḋaa ḋʰi▫aavahu gaṫ mukaṫ ṫisæ ṫé paahaa hé. ||4|| The Gurmukh meditates forever on the True Lord. Emancipation and liberation are obtained from Him. ||4|| ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ॥ सचु संजमु सतिगुरू दुआरै ॥ Sach sanjam saṫguroo ḋu▫aaræ. Truth and self-control are found through the Door of the True Guru. ਹਉਮੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥ हउमै क्रोधु सबदि निवारै ॥ Ha▫umæ kroḋʰ sabaḋ nivaaræ. Egotism and anger are silenced through the Shabad. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ सतिगुरु सेवि सदा सुखु पाईऐ सीलु संतोखु सभु ताहा हे ॥५॥ Saṫgur sév saḋaa sukʰ paa▫ee▫æ seel sanṫokʰ sabʰ ṫaahaa hé. ||5|| Serving the True Guru, lasting peace is found; humility and contentment all come from Him. ||5|| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਜਗਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ बिनु सतिगुर सेवे नामु न पाईऐ नामु सचा जगि लाहा हे ॥६॥ Bin saṫgur sévé naam na paa▫ee▫æ naam sachaa jag laahaa hé. ||6|| Without serving the True Guru, the Naam is not obtained. The Naam is the True profit in this world. ||6|| ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ हउमै मोहु उपजै संसारा ॥ Ha▫umæ moh upjæ sansaaraa. Out of egotism and attachment, the Universe welled up. ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ॥ सभु जगु बिनसै नामु विसारा ॥ Sabʰ jag binsæ naam visaaraa. Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all the world perishes. ਸਚਾ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥ सचा अमरु सबदि सुहाइआ ॥ Sachaa amar sabaḋ suhaa▫i▫aa. True is His Will, beauteous and pleasing through the Word of the Shabad. ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਮਿਲਿ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਇਆ ॥ पंच सबद मिलि वाजा वाइआ ॥ Panch sabaḋ mil vaajaa vaa▫i▫aa. The Panch Shabad, the five primal sounds, vibrate and resonate. ਸਦਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ सदा कारजु सचि नामि सुहेला बिनु सबदै कारजु केहा हे ॥७॥ Saḋaa kaaraj sach naam suhélaa bin sabḋæ kaaraj kéhaa hé. ||7|| Through the True Name, one’s actions are forever embellished. What can anyone do without the Shabad? ||7|| ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹਸੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਵੈ ॥ खिन महि हसै खिन महि रोवै ॥ Kʰin mėh hasæ kʰin mėh rovæ. One instant, he laughs, and the next instant, he cries. ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ दूजी दुरमति कारजु न होवै ॥ Ḋoojee ḋurmaṫ kaaraj na hovæ. Because of duality and evil-mindedness, his affairs are not resolved. ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਏ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ संजोगु विजोगु करतै लिखि पाए किरतु न चलै चलाहा हे ॥८॥ Sanjog vijog karṫæ likʰ paa▫é kiraṫ na chalæ chalaahaa hé. ||8|| Union and separation are preordained by the Creator. Actions already committed cannot be taken back. ||8|| ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ जीवन मुकति गुर सबदु कमाए ॥ Jeevan mukaṫ gur sabaḋ kamaa▫é. One who lives the Word of the Guru’s Shabad becomes Jivan Mukta - liberated while still alive. ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ गुर किरपा ते मिलै वडिआई हउमै रोगु न ताहा हे ॥९॥ Gur kirpaa ṫé milæ vadi▫aa▫ee ha▫umæ rog na ṫaahaa hé. ||9|| By Guru’s Grace, one is blessed with glorious greatness; he is not afflicted by the disease of egotism. ||9|| ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ हरि सिउ सद ही रहै समाए ॥ Har si▫o saḋ hee rahæ samaa▫é. He remains forever immersed in the Lord. ਰਸ ਕਸ ਖਾਏ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਵਧਾਏ ॥ रस कस खाए पिंडु वधाए ॥ Ras kas kʰaa▫é pind vaḋʰaa▫é. Eating tasty delicacies, he fattens up his body ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ भेख करै गुर सबदु न कमाए ॥ Bʰékʰ karæ gur sabaḋ na kamaa▫é. and wears religious robes, but he does not live to the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ अंतरि रोगु महा दुखु भारी बिसटा माहि समाहा हे ॥१०॥ Anṫar rog mahaa ḋukʰ bʰaaree bistaa maahi samaahaa hé. ||10|| Deep with the nucleus of his being is the great disease; he suffers terrible pain, and eventually sinks into the manure. ||10|| ਬੇਦ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੜਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥ बेद पड़हि पड़ि बादु वखाणहि ॥ Béḋ paṛėh paṛ baaḋ vakaaṇėh. He reads and studies the Vedas, and argues about them; ਘਟ ਮਹਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥ घट महि ब्रहमु तिसु सबदि न पछाणहि ॥ Gʰat mėh barahm ṫis sabaḋ na pachʰaaṇėh. God is within his own heart, but he does not recognize the Word of the Shabad. ਘਰਿ ਵਥੁ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ घरि वथु छोडहि बाहरि धावहि ॥ Gʰar vaṫʰ chʰodėh baahar ḋʰaavėh. Those who forsake the object within their own hearts, wander outside. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਤਤੁ ਬਿਲੋਵੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ गुरमुखि होवै सु ततु बिलोवै रसना हरि रसु ताहा हे ॥११॥ Gurmukʰ hovæ so ṫaṫ bilovæ rasnaa har ras ṫaahaa hé. ||11|| One who becomes Gurmukh churns the essence of reality; his tongue savors the sublime essence of the Lord. ||11|| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ मनमुख अंधे सादु न पावहि ॥ Manmukʰ anḋʰé saaḋ na paavahi. The blind, self-willed Manmukhs do not taste the flavor of God. ਅਨ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਫੀਕੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ अन रस राती रसना फीकी बोले हरि रसु मूलि न ताहा हे ॥१२॥ An ras raaṫee rasnaa feekee bolé har ras mool na ṫaahaa hé. ||12|| Imbued with the taste of another, their tongues speak tasteless, insipid words. They never taste the sublime essence of the Lord. ||12|| ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇਹੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਤਾਰੋ ॥ मनमुख देही भरमु भतारो ॥ Manmukʰ ḋéhee bʰaram bʰaṫaaro. The self-willed Manmukh has doubts as does his spouse. ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਰੈ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੋ ॥ दुरमति मरै नित होइ खुआरो ॥ Ḋurmaṫ maræ niṫ ho▫é kʰu▫aaro. He dies of evil-mindedness, and suffers forever. ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮਨੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਇਆ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ कामि क्रोधि मनु दूजै लाइआ सुपनै सुखु न ताहा हे ॥१३॥ Kaam kroḋʰ man ḋoojæ laa▫i▫aa supnæ sukʰ na ṫaahaa hé. ||13|| His mind is attached to sexual desire, anger and duality, and he does not find peace, even in dreams. ||13|| ਕੰਚਨ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਤਾਰੋ ॥ कंचन देही सबदु भतारो ॥ Kanchan ḋéhee sabaḋ bʰaṫaaro. The body becomes golden, with the Word of the Shabad as its spouse. ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥ अनदिनु भोग भोगे हरि सिउ पिआरो ॥ An▫ḋin bʰog bʰogé har si▫o pi▫aaro. Night and day, enjoy the enjoyments, and be in love with the Lord. ਮਹਲਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੈਰ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਭਾਣਾ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ महला अंदरि गैर महलु पाए भाणा बुझि समाहा हे ॥१४॥ Mėhlaa anḋar gær mahal paa▫é bʰaaṇaa bujʰ samaahaa hé. ||14|| Deep within the mansion of the self, one finds the Lord, who transcends this mansion. Realizing His Will, we merge in Him. ||14|| ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ आपे देवै देवणहारा ॥ Aapé ḋévæ ḋévaṇhaaraa. The Great Giver Himself gives. ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਚਾਰਾ ॥ तिसु आगै नही किसै का चारा ॥ Ṫis aagæ nahee kisæ kaa chaaraa. No one has any power to stand against Him. ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਥਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ आपे बखसे सबदि मिलाए तिस दा सबदु अथाहा हे ॥१५॥ Aapé bakʰsé sabaḋ milaa▫é ṫis ḋaa sabaḋ aṫʰaahaa hé. ||15|| He Himself forgives, and unites us with the Shabad; The Word of His Shabad is unfathomable. ||15|| ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੇਰਾ ॥ जीउ पिंडु सभु है तिसु केरा ॥ Jee▫o pind sabʰ hæ ṫis kéraa. Body and soul, all belong to Him. ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ सचा साहिबु ठाकुरु मेरा ॥ Sachaa saahib tʰaakur méraa. The True Lord is my only Lord and Master. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥੧੪॥ नानक गुरबाणी हरि पाइआ हरि जपु जापि समाहा हे ॥१६॥५॥१४॥ Naanak gurbaaṇee har paa▫i▫aa har jap jaap samaahaa hé. ||16||5||14|| O Nanak! Through the Word of the Guru’s Bani, I have found the Lord. Chanting the Lord’s Chant, I merge in Him. ||16||5||14|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ गुरमुखि कार करे प्रभ भावै गुरमुखि पूरा पाइदा ॥१॥ Gurmukʰ kaar karé parabʰ bʰaavæ gurmukʰ pooraa paa▫iḋaa. ||1|| The Gurmukh acts in harmony with God’s Will; the Gurmukh finds perfection. ||1|| ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਆਪਾਰੁ ॥ गुरमुखि गिआनु धिआनु आपारु ॥ Gurmukʰ gi▫aan ḋʰi▫aan aapaar. The Gurmukh attains infinite spiritual wisdom and meditation.
