ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਚੇਲਾ ॥ सबदु गुरू सुरति धुनि चेला ॥ Sabaḋ guroo suraṫ ḋʰun chélaa. The Shabad is the Guru, upon whom I lovingly focus my consciousness; I am the Chaylaa, the disciple. ਪਵਨ ਅਰੰਭੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਲਾ ॥ पवन अर्मभु सतिगुर मति वेला ॥ Pavan arambʰ saṫgur maṫ vélaa. From the air came the beginning. This is the age of the True Guru’s Teachings. ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਲੇ ਰਹਉ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ अकथ कथा ले रहउ निराला ॥ Akaṫʰ kaṫʰaa lé raha▫o niraalaa. Speaking the Unspoken Speech, I remain unattached. ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥ नानक जुगि जुगि गुर गोपाला ॥ Naanak jug jug gur gopaalaa. O Nanak! Throughout the ages, the Lord of the World is my Guru. ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਥਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ एकु सबदु जितु कथा वीचारी ॥ Ék sabaḋ jiṫ kaṫʰaa veechaaree. I contemplate the sermon of the Shabad, the Word of the One God. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥੪੪॥ गुरमुखि हउमै अगनि निवारी ॥४४॥ Gurmukʰ ha▫umæ agan nivaaree. ||44|| The Gurmukh puts out the fire of egotism. ||44|| ਮੈਣ ਕੇ ਦੰਤ ਕਿਉ ਖਾਈਐ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ मैण के दंत किउ खाईऐ सारु ॥ Mæṇ ké ḋanṫ ki▫o kʰaa▫ee▫æ saar. With the teeth of wax, how can one chew iron? ਜਿਤੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥ जितु गरबु जाइ सु कवणु आहारु ॥ Jiṫ garab jaa▫é so kavaṇ aahaar. What is that food, which takes away pride? ਹਿਵੈ ਕਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਪਿਰਾਹਨੁ ॥ हिवै का घरु मंदरु अगनि पिराहनु ॥ Hivæ kaa gʰar manḋar agan piraahan. How can one live in the palace, the home of snow, wearing robes of fire? ਕਵਨ ਗੁਫਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਅਵਾਹਨੁ ॥ कवन गुफा जितु रहै अवाहनु ॥ Kavan gufaa jiṫ rahæ avaahan. Where is that cave, within which one may remain unshaken? ਇਤ ਉਤ ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਾਣਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ इत उत किस कउ जाणि समावै ॥ Iṫ uṫ kis ka▫o jaaṇ samaavæ. Who should we know to be pervading here and there? ਕਵਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੪੫॥ कवन धिआनु मनु मनहि समावै ॥४५॥ Kavan ḋʰi▫aan man manėh samaavæ. ||45|| What is that meditation, which leads the mind to be absorbed in itself? ||45|| ਹਉ ਹਉ ਮੈ ਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਖੋਵੈ ॥ हउ हउ मै मै विचहु खोवै ॥ Ha▫o ha▫o mæ mæ vichahu kʰovæ. Eradicating egotism and individualism from within, ਦੂਜਾ ਮੇਟੈ ਏਕੋ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ दूजा मेटै एको होवै ॥ Ḋoojaa métæ éko hovæ. and erasing duality, the mortal becomes one with God. ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਖਾਈਐ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ सबदु कमाईऐ खाईऐ सारु ॥ Sabaḋ kamaa▫ee▫æ kʰaa▫ee▫æ saar. practicing the Shabad, one chews iron. ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ॥੪੬॥ नानक अगनि मरै सतिगुर कै भाणै ॥४६॥ Naanak agan maræ saṫgur kæ bʰaaṇæ. ||46|| O Nanak! The fire is quenched, through the Pleasure of the True Guru’s Will. ||46|| ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ अंतरि बाहरि एको जाणै ॥ Anṫar baahar éko jaaṇæ. Know the One Lord, inside and out. ਜਗੁ ਕਰੜਾ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ जगु करड़ा मनमुखु गावारु ॥ Jag karṛaa manmukʰ gaavaar. The world is difficult for the foolish, self-willed Manmukh; ਸਚ ਭੈ ਰਾਤਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥ सच भै राता गरबु निवारै ॥ Sach bʰæ raaṫaa garab nivaaræ. Imbued with the True Fear of God, pride is taken away; ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥ एको जाता सबदु वीचारै ॥ Éko jaaṫaa sabaḋ veechaaræ. realize that He is One, and contemplate the Shabad. ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹੀਆ ॥ सबदु वसै सचु अंतरि हीआ ॥ Sabaḋ vasæ sach anṫar hee▫aa. With the True Shabad abiding deep within the heart, ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗੀਆ ॥ तनु मनु सीतलु रंगि रंगीआ ॥ Ṫan man seeṫal rang rangee▫aa. the body and mind are cooled and soothed, and colored with the Lord’s Love. ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ कामु क्रोधु बिखु अगनि निवारे ॥ Kaam kroḋʰ bikʰ agan nivaaré. The fire of sexual desire, anger and corruption is quenched. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੪੭॥ नानक नदरी नदरि पिआरे ॥४७॥ Naanak naḋree naḋar pi▫aaré. ||47|| O Nanak! The Beloved bestows His Glance of Grace. ||47|| ਕਵਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਚੰਦੁ ਹਿਵੈ ਘਰੁ ਛਾਇਆ ॥ कवन मुखि चंदु हिवै घरु छाइआ ॥ Kavan mukʰ chanḋ hivæ gʰar chʰaa▫i▫aa. The moon of the mind is cool and dark; how is it enlightened? ਕਵਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਤਪੈ ਤਪਾਇਆ ॥ कवन मुखि सूरजु तपै तपाइआ ॥ Kavan mukʰ sooraj ṫapæ ṫapaa▫i▫aa. How does the sun blaze so brilliantly? ਕਵਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਜੋਹਤ ਨਿਤ ਰਹੈ ॥ कवन मुखि कालु जोहत नित रहै ॥ Kavan mukʰ kaal johaṫ niṫ rahæ. How can the constant watchful gaze of Death be turned away? ਬੋਲੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੪੮॥ बोलै बाणी नानकु बीचारै ॥४८॥ Bolæ baṇee Naanak beechaaræ. ||48|| Give us your thoughtful reply, O Nanak. ||48|| ਕਵਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਰਹੈ ॥ कवन बुधि गुरमुखि पति रहै ॥ Kavan buḋʰ gurmukʰ paṫ rahæ. By what understanding is the honor of the Gurmukh preserved? ਕਵਨੁ ਜੋਧੁ ਜੋ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥ कवनु जोधु जो कालु संघारै ॥ Kavan joḋʰ jo kaal sangʰaaræ. Who is the warrior, who conquers Death? ਸਬਦੁ ਭਾਖਤ ਸਸਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ सबदु भाखत ससि जोति अपारा ॥ Sabaḋ bʰaakʰaṫ sas joṫ apaaraa. Giving voice to the Shabad, the moon of the mind is illuminated with infinity. ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਿਟੈ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥ ससि घरि सूरु वसै मिटै अंधिआरा ॥ Sas gʰar soor vasæ mitæ anḋʰi▫aaraa. When the sun dwells in the house of the moon, the darkness is dispelled. ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥ सुखु दुखु सम करि नामु अधारा ॥ Sukʰ ḋukʰ sam kar naam aḋʰaaraa. Pleasure and pain are just the same, when one takes the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ਆਪੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ आपे पारि उतारणहारा ॥ Aapé paar uṫaaraṇhaaraa. He Himself saves, and carries us across. ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ गुर परचै मनु साचि समाइ ॥ Gur parchæ man saach samaa▫é. With faith in the Guru, the mind merges in Truth, ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੪੯॥ प्रणवति नानकु कालु न खाइ ॥४९॥ Paraṇvaṫ Naanak kaal na kʰaa▫é. ||49|| and then, prays Nanak, one is not consumed by Death. ||49|| ਨਾਮ ਤਤੁ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ नाम ततु सभ ही सिरि जापै ॥ Naam ṫaṫ sabʰ hee sir jaapæ. The essence of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is known to be the most exalted and excellent of all. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥ बिनु नावै दुखु कालु संतापै ॥ Bin naavæ ḋukʰ kaal sanṫaapæ. Without the Name, one is afflicted by pain and death. ਤਤੋ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥ ततो ततु मिलै मनु मानै ॥ Ṫaṫo ṫaṫ milæ man maanæ. When one’s essence merges into the essence, the mind is satisfied and fulfilled. ਦੂਜਾ ਜਾਇ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਨੈ ॥ दूजा जाइ इकतु घरि आनै ॥ Ḋoojaa jaa▫é ikaṫ gʰar aanæ. Duality is gone, and one enters into the home of the One Lord. ਬੋਲੈ ਪਵਨਾ ਗਗਨੁ ਗਰਜੈ ॥ बोलै पवना गगनु गरजै ॥ Bolæ pavnaa gagan garjæ. The breath blows across the sky of the Tenth Gate and vibrates. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਸਹਜੈ ॥੫੦॥ नानक निहचलु मिलणु सहजै ॥५०॥ Naanak nihchal milaṇ sahjæ. ||50|| O Nanak! The mortal then intuitively meets the eternal, unchanging Lord. ||50|| ਚਉਥੇ ਸੁੰਨੈ ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਪਾਪੁ ਨ ਪੁੰਨੰ ॥ चउथे सुंनै जो नरु जाणै ता कउ पापु न पुंनं ॥ Cha▫uṫʰé sunnæ jo nar jaaṇæ ṫaa ka▫o paap na puⁿnaⁿ. One who knows the Lord in the fourth state, is not subject to virtue or vice. ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੁੰਨੰ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੁੰਨੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੁੰਨ ਮਸੁੰਨੰ ॥ अंतरि सुंनं बाहरि सुंनं त्रिभवण सुंन मसुंनं ॥ Anṫar sunaⁿ baahar sunaⁿ ṫaribʰavaṇ sunn masuⁿnaⁿ. The absolute Lord is deep within; the absolute Lord is outside us as well. The absolute Lord totally fills the three worlds. ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੁੰਨ ਕਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਭੇਉ ॥ घटि घटि सुंन का जाणै भेउ ॥ Gʰat gʰat sunn kaa jaaṇæ bʰé▫o. One who knows the mystery of God the Absolute, who pervades each and every heart, ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥ आदि पुरखु निरंजन देउ ॥ Aaḋ purakʰ niranjan ḋé▫o. knows the Primal Being, the Immaculate Divine Lord. ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ जो जनु नाम निरंजन राता ॥ Jo jan naam niranjan raaṫaa. That humble being who is imbued with the Immaculate Naam, ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੫੧॥ नानक सोई पुरखु बिधाता ॥५१॥ Naanak so▫ee purakʰ biḋʰaaṫaa. ||51|| O Nanak! Is himself the Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny. ||51|| ਸੁੰਨੋ ਸੁੰਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ सुंनो सुंनु कहै सभु कोई ॥ Sunno sunn kahæ sabʰ ko▫ee. Everyone speaks of the Absolute Lord, the unmanifest void. ਅਨਹਤ ਸੁੰਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥ अनहत सुंनु कहा ते होई ॥ Anhaṫ sunn kahaa ṫé ho▫ee. How can one find this absolute void? ਅਨਹਤ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਕੈਸੇ ॥ अनहत सुंनि रते से कैसे ॥ Anhaṫ sunn raṫé sé kæsé. Who are they, who are attuned to this absolute void? ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਜੈਸੇ ॥ जिस ते उपजे तिस ही जैसे ॥ Jis ṫé upjé ṫis hee jæsé. They are like the Lord, from whom they originated. ਓਇ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ ओइ जनमि न मरहि न आवहि जाहि ॥ O▫é janam na marėh na aavahi jaahi. They are not born, they do not die; they do not come and go. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਹਿ ॥੫੨॥ नानक गुरमुखि मनु समझाहि ॥५२॥ Naanak gurmukʰ man samjʰaahi. ||52|| O Nanak! The Gurmukhs instruct their minds. ||52|| ਨਉ ਸਰ ਸੁਭਰ ਦਸਵੈ ਪੂਰੇ ॥ नउ सर सुभर दसवै पूरे ॥ Na▫o sar subʰar ḋasvæ pooré. By practicing control over the nine gates, one attains perfect control over the Tenth Gate. ਤਹ ਅਨਹਤ ਸੁੰਨ ਵਜਾਵਹਿ ਤੂਰੇ ॥ तह अनहत सुंन वजावहि तूरे ॥ Ṫah anhaṫ sunn vajaavah ṫooré. There, the unstruck sound current of the absolute Lord vibrates and resounds. ਸਾਚੈ ਰਾਚੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥ साचै राचे देखि हजूरे ॥ Saachæ raaché ḋékʰ hajooré. Behold the True Lord ever-present, and merge with Him. ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥ घटि घटि साचु रहिआ भरपूरे ॥ Gʰat gʰat saach rahi▫aa bʰarpooré. The True Lord is pervading and permeating each and every heart.
